I've had several requests for more savoury recipes in my easy recipes for kids section recently, so today I'm sharing a really easy potato wedges recipe. These wedges are so simple that any child old enough to use a knife can make them.* Younger children could participate too, by adding the oil and spices and stirring them in for example - there are always jobs to be found that even toddlers can 'help' with and it's so great for building their confidence in the kitchen!
*a quick note on knife use, I'm a great believer in letting children use proper knives in the kitchen as soon as they are ready, under CLOSE supervision, but it really does depend on each individual child, they are all different. So do use your judgement in assessing whether you believe your own child is ready and can be trusted to use a knife, and ALWAYS supervise closely!
These wedges are oven baked and much healthier than traditional deep fried chips or wedges, and they always go down well with my boys. We serve them up with lots of different meals - why not get the kids to make homemade burgers or easy chicken kebabs to go with them? As this recipe is part of my easy recipe for kids series, you'll find a free printable recipe sheet designed for children at the end of this post, so do print it out and let your own 'small child' have a go at making them!
Ingredients:
- 750g baby potatoes
- 1 tbs olive oil
- 1 tsp cumin
- 1 tsp smoked paprika
Method:
Preheat the oven to 200°C (Gas mark 6/390°F).
Scrub the potatoes in cold water then pat dry with kitchen paper. Chop each potato into 4 wedges.
Place in a roasting tin and pour over the olive oil. Give them a good stir to coat in oil. Sprinkle over cumin and paprika and stir again to coat.
Put the tin in the oven to cook for 25-30 minutes, taking out and shaking every 10 minutes to help the potatoes cook evenly.
Now that we have our Tefal Actifry (low fat air fryer) we usually use that to cook this recipe as it frees up oven space and cooks everything so beautifully evenly, but the oven method has also worked well for us many times over the years. If you have space for it, I would highly recommend an Actifry, we really love ours, especially for homemade chips, wedges and roasted vegetables!
As I mentioned above, I have created a free printable recipe sheet for this recipe so that your child can have a go at following the recipe themselves. Click on the picture below to download the PDF file.

These sound delicious - I love smoked paprika! I let Finn use a knife for cutting softer foods but he struggles a little on firmer foods like potatoes. I just let him hold it with me and he is happy enough with that.

Yummo...these look delicious and what kid doesn't love a delicious potato wedge, crunchy on the outside and mooshy in the middle.

Wow, so easy! I haven't made wedges for a long time, thus one's going on next weeks meal plan.
Lesley says
Would they be nice served cold at a buffet please? Thanks

Hi Lesley, I do prefer them warm but these would work cold too - my son often takes cold leftovers in his lunch box and thoroughly enjoys them!
