Today I'm sharing a simple idea for rainbow fruit ice cubes. I've been experimenting with fruit infused water recently, and these seemed the natural next step to try. I've found these a really fun way to jazz up plain drinking water for kids, helping to keep them happy and hydrated this summer!
I've spent a lot of time tearing my hair out over the years as Small Child just doesn't drink much at all. He'll always drink juice if it's offered, and he'll usually drink milk, but I don't want him to drink juice or milk all of the time, and I definitely want him to drink more water! No matter how much I try to encourage him though, he never seems to drink much.
Recently however, I made a simple discovery which practically guaranteed that he would drink a full glass of water! I couldn't believe it, such a simple trick that I'd been missing out on all these years! That trick was simply to add ice cubes to a glass or flask of water. Apparently ice cubes are super fun and iced water tastes a million times better - who knew?!
Although I suspect that novelty value is playing a big part in this, it's been a couple of weeks and the ice cube trick is still working! In the meantime, I've decided to have some fun with them in the hope of extending the novelty value of ice cubes for as long as possible, and these fruity ice cubes are my latest experiment.
They were quick and easy to make, and Small Child really loved them. As they melted, they gave the water a hint of fruity flavour, and Small Child loved having a mini frosty fruit salad to snack on when he'd finished drinking his water!
Rainbow Fruit Ice Cubes
Ingredients:
- handful raspberries
- handful blueberries
- 1 kiwi fruit
- 1 mandarin orange
- jug cold water
Method:
Start by washing the raspberries and blueberries, then fill a quarter of an ice cube tray with each fruit.
Peel and roughly chop the kiwi, and add to the ice cube tray
Peel the mandarin orange, removing as much of the white pith as possible. Break it into segments, then cut each segment in half. Use them to fill the last quarter of the ice cube tray.
When each compartment in the tray has been filled with fruit, pour over water to fill them all up.
Pop into the freezer and freeze overnight or until frozen solid.
Pop one of each flavour ice cube into a glass and top up with still or sparkling water for a pretty rainbow drink - yum!
