Disclosure: This blog post was commissioned by Warner Bros. in support of the cinema release of The Lego Movie 2. I was compensated for my time and the cost of ingredients, however all opinions expressed in this post are my own.
Do you have Lego fans in your house? Both of my boys are mad about Lego, so they are really excited about the upcoming cinema release of The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. Everything about the first movie was 'awesome', so we're all really excited that it's back for a second instalment!
Warner Bros. asked me to create some fun Lego themed food to celebrate the release of the new movie, so I made a Lego Movie 2 inspired bento box for my boys. It was a lot of fun to make and my boys loved it, especially the chocolate edible Lego minifigures!
The lunch includes an Emmet sandwich celebrating the hero of the film, vegetable and fruit Lego blocks and some yummy dark chocolate Lego minifigures for a special treat.
You'll find all the instructions to make this lunch yourself below, including step-by-step photos.
If you’re heading to the cinema to watch the Lego Movie 2, this themed lunch would make a great meal for before or after the film, and you could even get the kids involved in making their own – they’ll love the challenge of creating their own Emmet sandwich and edible Lego blocks!
Lego Movie 2 Bento Lunch Tutorial
Ingredients:
- 50g dark chocolate
- 2 slices bread
- 1 bread crust piece
- butter or spread
- 2 gouda cheese slices
- black and red edible marker pens
- ¼ large carrot
- ¼ cucumber
- 2 watermelon sticks
- 2 pineapple sticks
Method:
Start by making the dark chocolate Lego minifigures. Break the dark chocolate into pieces and place it in a microwave safe bowl.
Melt the chocolate by cooking in the microwave for 30 second bursts, stirring between each one to ensure it melts evenly. Be careful not to overheat or burn the chocolate, heat only until just melted and smooth.
Carefully spoon the melted chocolate into a Lego minifigure silicone mould. Tap the mould on the counter to remove any air bubbles from the chocolate, then place the mould in the fridge to set whilst you make the rest of the lunch.
Next make the Emmet sandwich. Make up a sandwich with two slices of bread. I filled mine with cheese, but you can use any filling of your choice.
Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich into a Lego minifigure head shape.
Using the sandwich as a guide, cut a Lego hair shape from the crust end of the bread.
Place the sandwich on top of a slice of cheese and cut around it. Pop the cheese on top of the sandwich to make the yellow Lego face.
Add the bread crust Lego hair on top of the sandwich. You can secure this in place with a little cream cheese or mayo if wanted.
Using edible marker pens, draw on the face features.
Transfer the sandwich to your lunch box, then make the fruit and vegetable Lego blocks.
For the vegetable Lego blocks, cut the carrot and cucumber length-ways into rectangle pieces.
Using a tiny round bento cutter or the end of a drinking straw, press circles into the vegetable pieces to look like Lego blocks.
Repeat with the pineapple and melon to create fruit Lego blocks.
Add the fruit and vegetable blocks to the lunch box, then carefully push a couple of the dark chocolate Lego minifigures from the mould and add to the lunch box to finish.
Enjoy!
