Good morning and happy Friday to you all! I'm so glad it's Friday - with the dark autumn days we've been having this week I'm feeling the need for a pyjama day, so that's our tomorrow sorted! In the meantime, the weather may have turned cold and miserable, but with today's lunch I'm sharing a little reminder of sunny summer days in the garden, with a fun garden bug themed lunch.
Welcome to another Fun Food Friday too! As is usual in my Friday blog posts, there is a linky at the bottom of this post, so if you’ve written any foodie posts, whether it be toddler meals, creative cakes, lovely lunches or a yummy recipe you’ve blogged, do feel free to join in and add your link! I try to comment on and tweet every post that’s linked up, and I pin them all to my special Fun Food Friday Pinterest board too.
Back to today's lunch! Small Child's bug lunch came about because I had a couple of sub rolls left over from making bonfire night hot dogs, and wanted to use them up for our lunches. I had a little think about how I could add a fun twist to them, and decided to use food picks to add legs and eyes to turn one into a fun caterpillar.
In this lunch Small Child had his sub roll caterpillar, which I split and filled with ham and houmous, before adding eye picks and polka dot picks to make the legs and antennae. I rested the roll on a couple of lettuce shaped silicone dividers, and added a mini Baybel cheese, which I turned into a ladybird with the help of a sharp knife, mini circle cutters and an edible marker pen for the eyes. On the side he had carrot and cucumber flowers which I shaped with mini bento cutters and decorated with leaf picks and bug picks, and an apple, which I cored, sliced and dipped in orange juice (to prevent browning) before decorating with a couple of pretty 3D butterfly picks. I finished the lunch off with some raisin 'dirt' in the dip well, which I topped with a couple of my homemade edible icing eyes.
Small Child enjoyed his bug lunch, eating most of it at school and finishing the rest off as an after school snack.

Thank you! I use orange juice because it's what I usually have on hand in the fridge, but actually any citrus juice will work. I've used various other juices in the past too - tropical/pineapple and even apple! Different types of apple brown at different speeds too - one of these days I'll experiment with my favourites and find out which are the best for cutting and keeping!
