Create a fun summer meal for your kids with these quick and easy fishy boats, tomato ketchup waves & carrot starfish!

Following on from the Doggy Hot Dogs I shared today, here's the second in my set of fun meal ideas for kids that I've created to celebrate the launch of new Heinz Tomato Ketchup No Added Sugar & Salt. This meal has a seaside theme, with edible boats, ketchup waves and carrot star fish on the side!
If you're a regular reader of the Eats Amazing blog, you'll know that I firmly believe in making food fun for kids to encourage exploration and a willingness to try new foods. You don't have to create incredible works of art every day, but adding some fun here and there can make all the difference to children's attitude to food.
As you can see from this simple meal, just adding a few fun tweaks to transform it into a seaside scene makes it much more fun to eat, and I've found that my kids are much more likely to give something new a try if it's presented in a fun way.
I like to get my kids involved in coming up with fun ideas and helping me to make their meals where possible - it's great to give them some control (within reason!) over their food. With a plain 'ordinary' family meal, I find that when my youngest is turning his nose up at his vegetables, simply asking him if he would like something to dip them in will often immediately change his mind and he'll be happy to eat them. Sometimes it's hummus, sometimes tomato ketchup, and with the new Heinz Tomato Ketchup No Added Sugar & Salt I feel even more relaxed about taking this approach.
To recreate this fun seaside inspired meal, follow the instructions below! You can also print off the recipe for future reference - you'll find a 'print' button on the recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Fishy Boats with Carrot Starfish
Ingredients (serves 1):
- 2 battered haddock goujons
- handful frozen mixed peas and sweetcorn
- ¼ medium carrot
- Heinz Tomato Ketchup No Added Sugar & Salt
- 1 slice Gouda cheese
- 2 x 15cm bamboo skewers
Method:
Cook the haddock goujons according to pack instructions, then leave to cool a little while you prepare the remaining ingredients.
Cook the peas and sweetcorn according to pack instructions.
Slice the carrot into rounds and cut them into stars using a mini star cutter (or cut out freehand). Lightly steam the carrot stars, or leave raw according to your child's preference.
Drain the peas and sweetcorn. Reserve 4 sweetcorn kernels and arrange the rest on the plate, covering roughly one third.
Using Heinz Tomato Ketchup No Added Sugar & Salt, draw wiggly lines to represent waves on the rest of the plate.
Build your edible sails; Slice the cheese in half along the diagonal to create two triangles. Carefully push a bamboo skewer through one corner of the cheese, then slide on a sweetcorn kernel to help hold it in place. Push the skewer through the opposite corner to make the sail and secure in place with another sweetcorn kernel. Repeat to make two cheese sails.
Once you are ready to serve the meal, push a sail into each goujon and carefully place them both on top of the ketchup waves.
Serve immediately and enjoy!
Note: If the goujons are too hot when you add the sails, the cheese may melt and fall down. Be sure to cool them down a little before serving and add the sails at the last minute!
