I created this simple recipe after spotting some cute plastic hot-dog trays while out shopping recently - my mind is never far from food and inspiration struck within minutes of buying them! I thought it would be fun to create a dessert hot dog, so in the place of standard hot dog buns I used sweet brioche rolls, made a quick and easy homemade berry sauce for 'ketchup', used sprinkles for the onion and of course bananas in the place of the hot-dog sausages. I'm pleased to say that it worked perfectly and my boys couldn't get enough of this fun treat!
Banana 'Hot Dogs'
Ingredients (serves 4):
For the berry sauce:
- 100g strawberries
- 100g raspberries
- 1 Tbs honey
- splash of lemon juice
To assemble:
- 4 brioche buns
- whipped cream
- 4 bananas
- berry sauce (see below)
- sprinkles (optional)
Method:
Start by making the berry sauce. Wash and hull the strawberries, then place in a small saucepan with the raspberries and honey. Add a splash of lemon juice, then place on a medium heat and gently bring to a simmer.
Turn down the heat to low and stir, then continue to cook on a low heat for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally to help mash up the fruit.
Leave to cool a little, then pour into a sieve over a bowl. Mash as much of the fruit through the sieve as possible, then decant the sauce into a squeezy bottle (if you have one) to use as berry 'ketchup' on your hot dogs. Pop the bottle into the fridge to cool before using, this will help to thicken up the sauce a little.
Once the sauce is ready, it's time to assemble your banana 'hot dogs'!
Slice the brioche buns down the centre and peel the bananas. Find the other ingredients and have them to hand, ready to assemble.
Spray or pipe whipped cream down the centre of each split brioche bun.
Place a banana into each cream-filled brioche roll. Top with a drizzle of berry sauce and finish with sprinkles, if wanted.
Notes: If you are short on time, you can of course use a ready-made berry sauce, but the homemade one is delicious and generally lower in sugar if you have time to make it yourself.
I used spray cream from a can to save time but you could also whip your own and pop it into a piping bag to serve if you prefer.
