As promised in a recent post, I wanted to share with you a quick and easy way to turn a boiled egg into a cute bunny rabbit. With just a sharp knife and a hard boiled egg, you can quickly make any meal a whole lot more fun, especially around Easter time.
These cute boiled egg bunnies are perfect for fun Easter food, you can serve them up as part of a fun Easter breakfast, lunch, snack or for Easter party food!
Be sure to check out my quick recipe video so you can see just how easy these are to make!
I've made various attempts at these rabbits over the time I've been making bento lunches, and sometimes it turns out better than others. Today's attempt wasn't my best either, but I did manage to take pictures of each step, so hopefully you can make your own 'improved' versions based on that!
Update: since writing this post, I used these rabbits in my prize-winning bunny rabbit Easter salad!
How to Make a Boiled Egg Rabbit
1. Hard boil your egg. As soon as it is cooked, remove it from the pan and soak in cold water until it is completely cool.
2. With a small sharp knife, slice a piece off one side of the egg as shown below. The flat side of the egg that you have created will become the bottom of the bunny, the piece you have cut off the ears.
3. With a mini circle cutter, round the ends of the piece of egg as shown. You could also cut it free-hand with your knife if you don't have a mini circle cutter.
4. Cut the egg into pieces as shown below, to form the two bunny ears.
Once you have made your bunny ears, place the egg flat side down, then cut two slits at an angle into the egg for the ears to slot into. Push the ears into place. You may need to use the tip of the knife to hold each slit open whilst you insert the ears.
Add features as wanted; I used a black edible marker pen to dot the eyes and nose, but you could also try using edible items such as seeds etc. I also added dried spaghetti whiskers this time - obviously these would need to be removed before eating the egg.
I made the bunny above in a bit of a rush, so it wasn't quite as pretty as I'd like, so I've included in this post a couple of better version I made on other occasions. The bunny below was one of my first attempts and had a tiny pink marshmallow nose.
You can also use the same method I've shown above to make boiled egg mice instead. Check out my tutorial for them here: How to make boiled egg mice.

These rabbits are adorable! I just made some for our Easter Salad. I didn't have a pen for drawing on the eyes, so I used pieces of black olive that I cut into tiny circles using a baby medicine syringe. If you pull the plunger out, stick the tip through the olive and then push the plunger in, the perfect little circle pops out. I then used the tip to cut out a small circle in the egg and just pushed the little olive piece right in. These are a little fiddly, but you don't need to make very many for a great display. Thanks so much for the idea! These will be a cute surprise for my guests.
