Re-purpose your gingerbread house kit to make an Easter gingerbread house with the kids! This fun food activity makes a great Easter centrepiece or dessert!
Today I'm sharing a fun project that my boys and I created recently, an Easter themed gingerbread house!
This idea came to me when I found a leftover gingerbread house kit at the back of my kitchen cupboard, after we completely forgot to make it in the chaos of last Christmas. The shops are full of Easter supplies at the moment so I decided to re-purpose the kit for a more suitable seasonal treat for this time of year!
We had so much fun working on this project together and my boys were very proud of their efforts! They weren't averse to smashing and eating it after they'd admired their handiwork for a day or two though, so we may have to make another one for Easter next week!
Be sure to check out our video to see our Easter gingerbread house decorating efforts in action!
If you're not fortunate enough to have a ready-made gingerbread kit hiding in your cupboard, you can of course make your own gingergbread house from scratch - this gingerbread house recipe from BBC Good Food looks great if you need a recipe.
I've shared the step by step process we used to decorate our house below, but you can of course decorate it in any way you wish - why not set out some bowls of Easter supplies and let the kids design their own! This is a lovely project to sit down and work on together as a family, it would be a great activity for the school holidays.
Easter Gingerbread House
Ingredients:
- gingerbread house kit
- royal icing
- green coconut sprinkles
- 1 bag tiny mini eggs
- 1 bag mini eggs
- 1 bag chocolate golden eggs
- 1 pack sugar carrot decorations
- 2 maltesers mini bunnies
- 1 pack wafer daisies
- 1 pack fluffy chicks
Method:
Start by putting together your gingerbread house kit, 'gluing' the house together with royal icing. Leave the house to dry and set for a while before you start decorating it.
Place the house on the plate or board that you wish to serve it on. Spread a layer of royal icing all around the house and sprinkle over the green coconut sprinkles for grass.
Pipe a line of royal icing along the top ridge of the roof and attach a line of tiny mini eggs.
Pipe a line of royal icing all around the edge of the base of the house and decorate with a line of mini eggs and golden eggs on all sides.
Pipe a thick line of royal icing from the front door for a path, and top with tiny mini eggs for paving stones.
Pipe royal icing onto the back of each sugar carrot and stick onto the roof to decorate.
Pop a couple of chocolate bunnies at the front of the house.
Press wafer daisies into the coconut grass, using a little royal icing to attach them if needed.
Finish your Easter house with a scattering of fluffy chicks.
Admire and enjoy!

I am so happy to find this post! My 8 year old son and I searched "easter gingerbread houses" exactly because we had a leftover IKEA house that we didn't get to decorate in the busy-ness of Christmas. Thank you so much for these amazing ideas and inspiration! It's great to have you based in the UK - we are in Ireland and so many blogs are US based and we can't get a lot of the ingredients. But we won't have any difficulty sourcing the items on the list. Thanks again. Happy Easter! (PS the kids are so excited - even the teens!!)
