Lego Lunchbox Review

It's been nearly a year since I started making bento lunches, and in all that time I've been eyeing up the LEGO lunchbox, determined to buy one for my LEGO loving son one day. 

I finally bit the bullet recently and rather excitedly placed an order for a LEGO lunchbox with Lunchbox World, a UK based company specialising in lunchboxes (my heaven!).  Our order arrived quickly and if you follow me on Instagram you may have seen the excitement the parcel caused when it arrived! 

I thought that it would be a nice 'back to school' treat for Small Child, who is going into Year One in September (where has the last year gone?!), but of course I couldn't resist trying it out before then!

The Lego lunchbox is a good size for bento lunches, at 10cm x 20cm.  It's made even better by the addition of the mini snack boxes, which I couldn't resist adding to my order.  They come in various different colours, but I chose blue for the big box, and red and yellow for the mini boxes, which come in two sizes. I've added a picture below showing how the mini boxes fit into the lunchbox; you could fit up to four 8-brick boxes or eight 4-brick boxes, should you wish! If you were to buy this lunchbox, I would highly recommend buying at least one of each size of the mini boxes; they are the perfect size for holding small snacks or dips and are also really useful for helping to divide the lunchbox up if you are packing a bento style lunch, and for keeping 'wet' and 'dry' foods separated.

We were going out for a picnic a few days after our lunchbox parcel arrived, so I packed up a LEGO themed lunch to match the box.  While I was quickly planning the lunch, I had a brainwave; to try using one of the mini snack boxes as an egg mould.  You may have seen moulded boiled eggs in other bento lunches, they are a brilliant way to add instant fun to a lunch.  If you haven't seen them before; behold my moulded LEGO egg, and watch this space for a tutorial and also for future experiments with the 'proper' boiled egg moulds that I have recently ordered!

In this lunch was a toasted pitta bread, sliced and made to look like LEGO by cutting mini circles from the end of the pitta and 'gluing' them on top with a smidge of houmous.  I filled one of the smallest mini pots with organic houmous (having used the other as the egg mould), and added the LEGO boiled egg.  I separated the pitta bread from the egg with a silicone divider to stop the pitta bread from getting soggy. In the larger mini box I put some cheese savouries (mini cheese crackers), and added slices of cucumber and raw carrot.  I finished the lunch off with some letter picks spelling out 'LEGO'.

Here is the same lunch shown with the lids on the mini boxes.  There may be a slight overload of LEGO in this lunch!

Small Child was really delighted with his LEGO lunch, and his new lunchbox was admired by children and adults alike!

In conclusion, I'm really pleased with the LEGO lunchbox for bento style lunches.  It probably wouldn't be quite big enough for someone packing a 'traditional' lunch, but it's an ideal size for bento.  The mini snack boxes are really very cute, and more importantly a useful size for snacks and dips, as I've shown above.  I'd highly recommend buying the mini boxes in addition to the lunchbox, as they fit perfectly, and of course add to the fun factor.  The boxes are really bright and cheerful, and seem to be great quality plastic too.  The only slight negative is that Small Child found it quite tricky to open the lunchbox by himself - the top half has to be lifted straight upwards from the base with one hand whilst the base is held firmly in the other hand.  This is difficult for small hands to manage, but hopefully there will be an adult around to help him should he need it.  It should be noted that one of Small Child's friends, who is a little older (aged seven), had no problem opening it.  The LEGO lunchboxes are also fairly pricey, but great quality and in my opinion completely worth it, if only to see a small child's eyes light up when they see it!  They are currently being sold at a lower price than the RRP at Lunchbox World, so well worth a look if you're interested in buying one.

I expect you'll be seeing a lot more of this lunchbox in use for future lunches!
