Today we celebrate St George, the patron Saint of England. St George's Day has been celebrated since 1222AD, nearly 1000 years after his birth in 270AD. There is a medieval legend that tells the story of St George slaying a dragon in order to rescue a princess from it's clutches, which Small Child loves. When I was making his lunch today he was most upset that I had forgotten St George's sword, so I added a sword pick at the last minute with a couple of grapes skewered on it to keep him happy!
In this lunch Small Child had a sandwich filled with German sausage slices, cut into the shape of a shield and decorated with strips of extra sausage. He also had a Babybel, with the English 'flag of St George' cut from the wax. On the side he had some raw carrot stick 'fire' decorated with a wooden dragon pick, a hard boiled egg topped with strips of red pepper to form another St George's flag, and a couple of red grapes skewered on a sword pick.
For his after school snack Small Child had a very special treat of a meringue and strawberries, which were skewered on more of the sword picks. I thought it was an appropriate snack for St George's day, as it is a very English dessert, not to mention the fact that it is made up of the red and white flag colours too. Whilst I do my best to keep our food healthy, it's nice to have a treat every now and again; everything in moderation as they say!
Today was the hottest day of the year so far (not a hard record to beat to be fair), so we went straight to the park after school and spent the rest of the afternoon there in the glorious sunshine. It was the perfect weather for strawberries, so they didn't last very long!
