On Thursday, we celebrate ‘World Book Day’ here in the UK. To mark the occasion, Small Child’s school is holding a ‘Book Week’ this week. I decided to join in the fun by creating a book themed lunch every day this week for Small Child based on some of his favourite books. As well as creating book themed lunches, I’m also hosting a linky party some days on the theme of the book, so check out the links at the end of each post for more book related fun, and of course please add links to any blog posts you may have on the day’s theme. This could be a food or a craft post, as long as it is related to the theme in some way. Many thanks to Cristi from BentOnBetterLunches for helping me to set up the linkies!
Today’s book is the Gruffalo, a big favourite in our house and with children everywhere.
He has terrible tusks, and terrible claws,
and terrible teeth in his terrible jaws...
He has knobbly knees and turned-out toes,
and a poisonous wart at the end of his nose...
His eyes are orange, his tongue is black;
He has purple prickles all over his back!
In this lunch, Small Child has a homemade Gruffalo cheese & tomato pizza, with carrots for his orange eyes, a pea for his poisonous wart and cheddar cheese for his terrible tusks and terrible teeth. On the side he has some roasted fox (shredded roast chicken) and some more orange eyes & poisonous warts (carrot disks & peas).
For dessert he has some ‘Owl Ice Cream’ (frozen organic yoghurt decorated with a halved grape & sprinkles), ‘Scrambled Snake’ (a fruit string with a couple of tiny sweets for eyes) and some nuts/acorns to keep the mouse happy (chocolate dipped grapes). This lunch has a little more in the way of ‘treats’ than normal, but it’s a special occasion and I’m sure Small Child will enjoy it!
Small Child went into school this morning very excited about his Gruffalo Lunch. I'm looking forward to the challenge of making lunches for the other 4 books he has chosen!

That is such a great idea! I don't think I could ever manage something so creative for my kids, but I might give it a go next year 🙂

Thanks for popping by Jess! Today's lunch is a bit more elaborate than normal, as it's a special occasion, but bento lunches can be quick and easy to make, I'd definitely recommend you give them a try!
